As I plan my year ahead, I was thinking that many other people also do the same thing at this time also.   For me I try to plan both my personal goals and also things that I’d like to get done around the home, things I’d like to do for others, etc.  With the economy slowly gaining footing again and things starting to look slightly more positive than it has been for the past few years, I think it might be a good time to  consider sprucing up your home to give you a cheery disposition for the New Year!  One way might be to consider using decorative window film to give your windows, doors, or other glass areas a little bit of lift.   Of course you knew I was going to say that…. didn’t you? :-)

If your a little bit hesitant to fill your windows from floor to ceiling with stained glass window film, or some other designs…maybe just a single window cling put on your sliding glass door or kitchen skylight might do the trick.

One example is actually found at my in-laws.  They live in Florida and have a lanai patio which attaches directly to their home.  It actually has two sliding glass doors on two different walls that go into the patio area.  On one of them my mother in law placed a very nice center piece window cling that I thought was perfect.  Its actually funny as it not only looks nice, but it has prevented a few accidents from people walking into the glass doors.  Sometimes when the glass is just cleaned and the sun shines on it the right way…you seriously can not even see glass at all.  It looks like the door is open.  Oops!   Anyway, to show you what I mean the window cling looks something like this one does…sliding-glass-door

Aside from this particular type of window film, I also like small suncatchers and corner pieces that are found online.  And even better than buying pre-made corners or centerpieces, is if you are creative.

I’ve seen some really cool designs that people do using stencils and scissors. One woman actually used the window film like you would a wallpaper border, but she put it along a row of windows that were essentially unreachable in day to day life.  These windows were part of an A-frame house and were in the “upper” part of the “A”.  This was a few years ago and I actually hadn’t seen anyone do something like that before.  Now though, you can actually buy these window film borders pre-made and cut for you.  So I guess you don’t need that much creativity after all…haha.

Of course if you DO still want to be creative, I recommend finding a very pretty pattern of stained glass window film, or etched glass window film and making an attempt to fit it to your particular situation.  Remember, these window films are very flexible in that they can adhere to most any glass surface such as windows, mirrors, doors, and even car windows.

One such pattern that I recent found that has given me some inspiration for the new year was actually over at Amazon.   Below is a picture of it. It is called Clematis.  Its’ pretty nice I think.flowers

I was thinking of creating a template of a decorative pattern and just cutting out pieces from this one sheet of  static cling window film.   I really like this particular pattern as it reminds me of my own grandfather when I was younger.  He used to create stained glass lamps as one of his hobbies and I always admired his skill and patience.  This particular pattern looks very much like one of the lamp shades he made many years ago.

Whatever you choose to do for the New Year ahead, I wish you much joy and happiness.  Don’t neglect yourself this year and remember to make your home a beautiful place to be.  Keep it as your sanctuary and fill it with love and laughter.   Have a great year in 2010!

  • That frosted design at your in-laws looks a very complex design – did you cut this yourself on a plotter or is it an actual design on a film? if you done it on a plotter I bet you had fun weeding it.

  • This particular decal was one that resembles my inlaws window cling. In my in-laws situation, they actually purchased their window cling decal online. Finding plotters and having the patience for cutting out patterns like these would take a lot of effort that an average home owner like my inlaws would not enjoy ;-) . For most people, keeping things simple and easy is the best course of action…even if the window cling isn’t exactly what you want. Thanks for reading.
