PostHeaderIcon Window Film vs. Window Blinds Which is Better?

It might seem odd that I’m writing an article about which window treatment I think is better when the name of my blog is mystainedglasswindowfilm.com.    But I think you’ll probably agree with me that traditional window treatments certainly have a very good place in every home.   I thought it might be a good idea to share some of my thoughts on where window film might work and then also where it makes more sense to use window blinds or curtains.

First off, I think decorative window film is a great solution for many people.  However, I also realize that not everyone likes the semi-transparency that comes with a window film vs. a solid set of room darkening blinds.  What you no doubt have experienced yourself is that the film material lets in outdoor light.  This can be great for home owners who only want to obscure views into their home, but at the same time allow natural daylight and sunshine to come in.   For other people…for instance those who work night shifts such as nurses, factory laborers and taxi drivers…they need absolute darkness when they try to go to sleep.   In situations like this, the only sure way to block out light will be with thick curtains, or darkening shades like roman shades.

What about homes with drafty windows?  I get this question from time to time, and to be honest window film isn’t going to help prevent air leaks or wind from coming into your home.  This really is a function of the seal on your windows (or lack thereof).  In a case like this, if you can’t afford to replace your windows and you’ve tried your best to weatherproof them with caulk or other means, you may have good luck by using heavy curtains that are kept closed during the most cold weather days.     Curtains while not perfect, can certainly help a bit when stopping drafts  especially if they are made of heavy material.

Finally, what about bathrooms?  Personally I use frosted glass window film on my window that is facing my backyard. This window is about shoulder height in my shower so even while taking a shower, someone on the outside could really only see from my neck on up.  And even then, the view would be so obscured because of the frosted covering, that you couldn’t tell if it was me or not in there.   However, I do know that many other people are way more modest than I am and prefer to not let anyone see inside of the bathroom areas in there home.  In these cases, it may make more sense to install a drop roman shade, or perhaps a pull down shade just while you are using the facilities.    If it makes you more comfortable, by all means do it.

So in summary, as I re-read this post, I’ve realized that window film isn’t really any better or worse than traditional window treatments.  It really comes down to two things.  1) Personal preference  2) Budget   If you want to add style or flair to your home, consider adding a little bit of decorative window film that have stained glass pattens or etched glass patterns.  If  instead you are more concerned with privacy and comfort (like our example of the drafty windows), you are going to want to consider spending a bit more money and finding a set of curtains or roman blinds to cover your windows.
